Hazel and Charlie always thought of themselves as good people, the kind of people who were willing to lend a hand to others.

Charlie had accompanied his workmate, Joe, to Mineral Wells Spa to take a cure, and they’d become best friends. Hazel worked tirelessly as a suffragist, with Charlie’s encouragement, to improve the lives of all women. She was proud of the fact that she had taught an immigrant friend to read, simply because it was a kindness.

Hazel knew her Bible cover to cover. So did Charlie, even though he claimed he and the Lord had a special relationship, so he did his praying alone on Sundays instead of accompanying his wife and the babies to church. However, Hazel had her suspicions that the funnies and the sports page might have taken up some of the time.

Notwithstanding, they both knew that they’d survived the past few years on faith, hope and charity. Their faith had sustained them through some rough patches. Hazel had lost her career, and had lost a child, but still held her head high. She hoped she’d be able to perform again instead of staying home, and Charlie encouraged this very modern notion. Their good friends provided childcare, and food when they needed the charity they offered.

It felt as though they were surrounded by saints on earth until their lives were turned upside down and they faced a parent’s worst nightmare: had they been betrayed by people they trusted?
